Digital Printing vs. Lithographic Printing

Digital printing is the modern way of printing by reproducing digital images on physical surfaces, e.g. paper or photographic paper, cloth, plastic, etc.   This is becoming increasingly cost effective especially for small quantity runs.

Litho printing is a technique where the inked image is transferred via a template. (Typically, printing templates are attached to a cylinder in the lithographic press and ink is applied to the plate’s image area and transferred directly to the paper).  A very fast and cheap process for large runs and especially suitable for single or only 2 colour printing requirements.

Set up costs are lower, and new technology and innovation are eroding the cost advantages provided by lithographic printing.  Additionally, why order large print runs when business nowadays needs to respond ever faster to prevailing market trends making existing large print stocks quickly redundant or surplus to requirements?

For trial runs or small quantities the advantages of digital printing offset the higher set up costs of lithographic printing.  The quality and costs of digital printing are now becoming an effective alternative.
